Hashish and Marijuana Heres How to Differentiate Them

If you have just entered the world of cannabis, you may think that marijuana and hashish are two interchangeable words that are used to describe the same. But they are not. Next, we show you the differences.

Marijuana refers to dried cannabis. In most parts of the world, marijuana is composed of cannabis flowers that have dried and cured, and are ready to smoke, vaporize, cook or become some kind of concentrate. In some areas of the world (such as South America and Southeast Asia, for example), you can still find “marijuana bricks”, which usually contains buds, stems, leaves and seeds, all compressed in a hard, dark block.

There are many varieties of cannabis, and all produce unique effects. Cannabis growers have been raising and manipulating these strains since the 1980s, to produce unique varieties with different aromas, flavors, and effects. Sativa varieties tend to produce a more stimulating energizing effect, while indica varieties are considered to produce more relaxing and calming effects. But you have to keep in mind that the effects of a strain are reduced to its chemical composition, not to its genetic lineage.

Hashish (or hash), on the other hand, refers to a cannabis extract that is made by separating the resin from the buds (and/or sugar leaves). There are many different ways to make hashish, but they all involve separating the trichomes and pressing them in the form of a block, ball, cylinder or coin. The result is a strong concentrate with a unique taste and effects.

Some of the most traditional forms of hashish come from Afghanistan, Morocco, and India. Afghan and Moroccan hashish was traditionally made by passing dry cannabis through fine sieves. The soft friction action separates the trichomes from the dried plant material to make kief, which is then heated and pressed to produce blocks of dark, creamy and very powerful hashish.

In India, on the other hand, hashish is produced differently. There, fresh cannabis buds are picked and rubbed between the hands. Heat and friction cause the trichomes to separate from the plant material present and create a thick, dark resin that sticks to the hands. This then turns into balls and is sold as charas.

Among the other forms of hashish, we can find rosin, bubble hash and BHO, these last two extracted through solvents.

Now that you understand the difference between hashish and marijuana, here is a brief description of their differences in terms of preparation, taste, effects, potency, and consumption.

Marijuana is prepared by growing feminized cannabis plants, it is expected to flourish, preventing them from being pollinated by males, and their buds are harvested when they are at maximum maturity. Today, most marijuana plants are grown indoors, using specific lights, ventilation systems, and fertilizers to help maximize the ability to produce resin from a female cannabis plant.

After approximately 8-12 weeks of flowering (depending on the strain), the female plants are cut and the buds are dried for about two weeks, before placing them in jars for a cure. This process is vital because it helps buds ripen and maximize potency and taste.

Hashish can be prepared in many ways, but they all involve separating the trichomes from cannabis buds and joining them together. The simplest and traditional ways of making hashish are those used in Morocco and India (which we have mentioned before). Rosin, on the other hand, is made by pressing cannabis flowers with a hot press or hair straightener to extract a very potent golden resin. On the other hand, ice water and manual agitation are needed to make bubble hash to separate the trichomes, and for the BHO butane is used.

There is a big difference in the taste of marijuana and hashish. While marijuana tends to have fresher, herbal and sometimes fruity flavors and aromas, hashish tends to be complex, rich and spicy. Keep in mind that the flavors of hashish and marijuana will vary according to the strain that has been used to create them. The taste of hashish also varies greatly depending on the way in which it was made.

Hashish is much more potent than marijuana. Most cannabis varieties in the current market produce between 15 and 30% THC. As hashish is made by combining a huge amount of trichomes, it can reach powers of 40, 50 or even 60%. Again, the exact potency of marijuana or hashish will vary depending on one strain or another, and will also depend on the method of preparation used to make hashish. Today, BHO is the most powerful type of hashish, reaching more than 90% THC.

This is where marijuana and hashish have more things in common. Both can be smoked, vaporized or added to groceries. But weed flowers can be used to make concentrates and not hashish.

How to Prepare Hashish

Do not know what to do with the remains of manicure? Do you want to smoke something new? You are in the right place, we explain how to turn the kief into hashish.

Hashish is obtained from the separation of trichomes from marijuana plants. Most trichomes are concentrated in mature cannabis flowers, but they can also be found in lower concentrations for the rest of the plant. For this reason, many growers keep the remains of manicuring or pruning; to extract all the loaded trichomes from those incredible cannabinoids and terpenes. These trichomes can be used to prepare edibles or to make hashish by heat or pressure. Until recently, the trichomes were simply called “kief.” In fact, technically the kief, kif or knife is the bulky formation of crystals at the end of the trichomes, like microscopic glands that look like hairs.

With the additional procedures for making hashish, a product with an unmistakable aroma, aroma and physical consistency is obtained. Next, we will explain several ways to extract trichomes and turn them into hashish.

Rub your hands

This is a process that usually occurs as a result of handling a large number of buds and remains of manicuring during harvest. Basically, the trichomes stick to your hands, forming a visible black layer of sticky resin. Once you have enough material in your hands, you can rub them to form hashish balls.

For this method, you do not need a specific amount of trichomes, but it is usually preferable to accumulate a good amount since the balls are quite small. Obviously, the more trichomes you compress and rub, the more hashish you will get.

Keep in mind that, depending on the degree of cleanliness of the hands of the person who rubs, in addition to cannabinoids and other good substances, natural oils and dirt from the skin will also be collected. Although this probably does not affect much to the taste, since the trichomes dominate in terms of aroma and flavor.

For most of us, kief is that delight you pick up from the grinder’s bottom. In fact, this is one of several methods to extract it. Later we will explain other more elaborate extraction methods. But now we will explain how to make hashish once the kief is collected. You will need a pollen press. The pressure of this device will transform the kief into a perfectly compressed hash.

For this process to be successful, collect as much kief as possible and enter it in the press. Then, turn the handle until it is as tight as possible. For this part, you really have to make an effort. When you think it’s ready, unscrew the other side of the press. Turn the handle until the hashish comes out. The amber-looking cylinder you will get is your hashish. Now you can shred the amount you want for your next joint or bong.

The dry sieving method is also relatively easy, but you will need a silk filter. The smaller the sieve holes, the purer your hashish will be. This depends on whether you prefer quantity or quality.

Put the marijuana in the freezer for a few hours. This will help the trichomes separate from the plant. Next, put the remains of the plant on the sieve, on a flat and clean surface. Rub the plant against the sieve gently. The trichomes will fall on the flat surface. You can continue doing it for as long as you want. You should try to get at least 10% of the total weight of the plant in trichomes.

You probably already have all the necessary materials for this method at home, but you will also need a silk sieve. Put the remains of manicured or pruned in the blender and add water to cover them. Add enough ice and beat it all for about a minute.

Once done, take a glass canister and filter the mixture in, helping you with the sieve. Let stand for half an hour. You will see that the trichomes are deposited to the bottom. This is exactly what you are looking for. Try to empty ⅔ of the water approximately, being careful not to lose the precious trichomes. Then fill the boat again with water and ice; Let stand for 3-5 minutes and then drain ⅔ of the water again. To get a high-quality hash, repeat this process 4 or 5 times.

Finally, extract as much water as possible from the boat, without losing trichomes in the process. Take a paper filter for coffee maker. Pass the solution through the filter; This should separate most of the water from the trichomes. Squeeze the filter to remove excess water and then let the kief dry. What you will get is the final product. You no longer need to treat it with pressure or heat. You can enjoy it as it is in a joint or bong.

Dry ice is a method that only extracts the resin. It is one of the purest methods for homemade hashish production. For this cannabis science experiment, you will need a bucket, dry ice, safety gloves and bubble bag filters (created specifically for the extraction of hashish with water and ice). These mesh bags have different levels of perforation according to the desired purity. With a bag of 73 μm (microns) you will get the purest result: only resin. If you use a 160 μm bag, you will collect a larger quantity of product, but also more plant material. But this is not necessarily something negative, it just depends on what you are looking for.

Now that you have the materials ready, put your flowers or plant remains in a large bucket with dry ice. Stir and stir slightly for a few minutes. This will help the resin glands to separate from the plant, thanks to the temperature. Dry ice is used primarily so that the product is not too wet.

The next step is to take the bubble bag and place it on top of the cube so that you can turn it upside down.

Look for a large, flat and clean surface. Turn the bucket upside down, transferring the plant and dry ice to the bag. Take the bag firmly and shake it on the surface. After stirring several minutes, you will see that the surface has been covered with an amber-looking powder. With a card, scratch everything to a pile. This is your resin, and it sure looks delicious. To convert it to hashish, introduce the resin into the pollen press and follow the steps mentioned above.

You may have heard this name before since charas is a well-known extract in India, Nepal and other regions. Its elaboration follows a process similar to rubbing the hands, but the difference is that the charas are produced with fresh buds or parts of the plant, that is, they have not dried yet.

For this method, most growers cut some branches of plants that are within 2 or 3 weeks of reaching full maturity. Others wait at harvest time. From here, the process is identical to rubbing hands. Gently scrub the buds and remains of the plant in your hands until a thick layer appears. Charas can be smoked with most methods. You can add it to a joint, bong, pipe or chillum.

For those with a bigger budget, there is an automated option that will save you time and energy! It works similarly to the dry sieving method, but the process is done by a machine. Marijuana is placed in a bowl, which is covered with a large silk sieve. The machine will shake this bowl, releasing the delicious trichomes. For best results, put marijuana in the freezer during the previous 3 hours.

With this process, only the kief is obtained. To transform it into hashish, you can use a pollen press or your favorite method.

As you have seen, there are various methods for pollen extraction. Each technique can vary according to the grower, but all are based on separating the trichomes/kief from the plant and compressing them into a solid substance. But even this list does not cover all possible methods used today. So, how do you decide which technique to use?

There are certain factors that you should consider. First, you must decide how much money you want to spend. Some of these methods can be done with materials you already have at home. So you could start with one of these. If you are not satisfied, you can buy silk sieve or bubble bags and try those methods. And if you think you can do even better, you can invest more than € 300 in a mechanical cylinder.

It also depends on whether you do this professionally or just want to improve your personal report. We hope we have provided you with enough information so you can make a decision and start making your own hashish. Good luck!
