Rummy is not of those card games that enjoy worldwide popularity; yet, being a hybrid of European and Asian vision of card games, rummy is quite popular in India and some other Commonwealth countries. The app made in the digital age could have raised its popularity, but issues are everywhere.
Graphics and Sound 5/10
We never require too much design from a card game. Please, no casino rooms in 3D, no animated backs, no slot machine style. What we want is just a good deck and a fast response. What we see in Rummy 500! looks quite decent but still too posh when it comes to real work.
Playing Rummy 500! on old machines can be a torture due to intolerable delays players will experience. It’s quite okay to select online game and see nothing but an ad with all the unwanted things listed above, and then the app crashes. So make sure your machine is powerful enough for card games, and running Photoshop or Cubase on it makes no guarantee.
Though there are just two basic moves (clicking/tapping or dragging) in card games, it may be not that easy to understand when they are interchangeable and when they aren’t in Rummy 500. So, if you just make a meld out of your cards, it’s enough to tap or click any of them, regardless of the order. If you want to drop a card out, you need to drag or tap it and then confirm your action. It all seems a little complicated (maybe even more complicated than the rules of the game itself).
To cut it short, rummy games require you to get rid of your cards by building melds. If you have three or four cards of the same rank, or a sequence of three or more cards of the same suit, you can get rid of them, forming a meld. The melds remain open and visible. Any player can add a card or even several cards if they fit into a meld, no matter whose it was initially. The aim is to meld away all your cards. It’s just the basic version of rules; the complete one will be displayed as a tutorial when you start playing.
The rules differ in different variations of rummy, and Rummy 500 includes multiple versions. But you need to unlock most of them by levelling up.
In order to play online, you need to have enough chips to buy into a game. If you win, you get the bets including the chips. If you lose, you lose them. You can get more of them as a daily bonus, or just purchase.
Lasting Appeal 9/10
Card games that stay for any noticeable time are usually of long-lasting appeal. Rummy is quite a folk game, with varying rules and lots of fans, and its popularity started before the all and will stay long after. You’ll probably sooner be attracted by another card game than get tired with this particular app.
Making apps based on these games is a sure thing. But the trick to do is making it right. Please, Mr. Developer, don’t let it crash when searching for a partner. And then rummy games will get a wider fan base.
